Early Life and Overcoming Disability


Manish Narwal was born on October 17, 2001, in the small village of Faridabad, Haryana. From a young age, Manish was energetic and adventurous, but he was also faced with a significant challenge—he was born with a congenital impairment in his right hand. This disability, however, never dimmed his spirit or his will to succeed. His family, recognizing his potential and determination, provided him with unwavering support, encouraging him to pursue his interests despite the odds.

In the early years, Manish tried his hand at various sports, but it wasn’t until he discovered shooting that his true passion was ignited. Introduced to para shooting at the age of 13 by coach Rakesh Thakur, Manish took to the sport with natural ease. What started as a mere interest soon turned into an all-consuming passion. The precision and focus required in shooting seemed to be a perfect match for his personality. Despite the physical challenges, Manish’s dedication to the sport saw him quickly rise through the ranks in the national shooting circuit.

Rise in Para Shooting

Manish’s journey in para shooting began in earnest in 2016 when he started training at the Shooting Ball Sports Academy in Ballabhgarh, under the guidance of coach Subhash Rana. His hard work and talent were evident from the start, and it wasn’t long before he began making waves at the national level. In 2017, he participated in his first National Shooting Championship in the para-shooting category and astonished everyone by winning a gold medal.

From then on, there was no looking back. Manish’s natural ability, combined with his relentless practice regimen, led him to dominate the para shooting scene in India. He quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with, known for his calm demeanor and unwavering focus during competitions. His success on the national stage paved the way for his entry into international competitions, where he continued to shine.


Outstanding Performance in Tokyo 2020

The Tokyo 2020 Paralympics marked a turning point in Manish Narwal’s career. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted training schedules and led to uncertainties around the event, Manish remained focused on his goal. Representing India in the Men's 10m air pistol SH1 event, he faced off against some of the world’s best shooters. The competition was fierce, but Manish’s determination and skill saw him through.

In a nail-biting final, Manish delivered an extraordinary performance, shooting a score of 218.2 to clinch the gold medal. His victory was historic—not only did he bring home India’s first-ever gold in this event, but he also set a new Paralympic record. Manish’s triumph in Tokyo was a testament to his resilience, talent, and the countless hours of training he had invested in mastering his craft. It also served as an inspiration to countless others, showing that with determination and hard work, anything is possible.
